Maun to Gweta

Tuesday afternoon, October 12th, 2010

We had lunch at our campsite in Maun and then headed of to Gweta to our unique experience camping under ancient Baobab trees.  The trip was uneventful and not much to report, but it is clear to me that this part of Africa could have potential for some grain farming.  There appeared to be some cultivation in areas that we passed through, but long stretches of dry weather might well discourage widespread farming.

We arrived at our unique campsite which appeared to be in the middle of nowhere.  The only thing identifying it was a large statue of an aardvark alongside the road.  After taking some pictures posing with the aardvark, we headed down the lane to the campsite where we were introduced to the ancient Baobab tree.  The guide (Janet) told us that the Baobab trees here are over 1000 years old.  The trees are very strange looking and almost appear to have been planted upside down.  The campground and facilities were as unique as the trees.

Well that’s all for today folks.  We'll talk more tomorrow when we get to Kasane near Chobe National Park.
