I got up at around 5:30 a.m. and headed for the beach to get some sunrise pictures. After, I packed up my stuff and tent, had breakfast and got prepared for the next leg of our journey to the northern part of Lake Malawi where we will spend a couple of nights before heading into Tanzania.
Last night we drew names from a hat and what we have to do is dress that person up in some funny apparel for a competition to be held tonight. We will be stopping at a village market before our arrival at the next campsite where we will get a chance to buy some dress-up clothing. I pulled Eric’s name, who is probably the biggest guy in our group, so will likely have a difficult time finding something for him to wear.
We got away from camp at 8:00 a.m. and headed northwest which took us away from the shore of Lake Malawi. The terrain is quite hilly and dotted with small villages of mostly brick homes. The brick, which is low quality with limited life expectancy, is made by the villagers from the local clay. Many of the villages we passed by appear to get funding help and sponsorship from various religious-based organizations.
Mzuzu Market |
We arrived at Mzuzu where there was a large market located next to the highway. Off we went, in all directions, looking for appropriate apparel to fit our drawn name. I shopped in the women's market and purchased the largest dress I could find for $5. About an hour later we were back on the bus headed for our destination of Chitimiba.
We arrived in Chitimba in the late afternoon, set up camp, had supper and then did our dress-up thing. We had a ball. Hardeep had drawn my name and had purchased a bright blue dress and tie for me to wear; however, the dress was on the small side so I had a hard time getting into it. Eric’s dress fit him to a tee. He was so comfortable in it that he wore it long into the night. We were all beginning to think he might be a bit strange (NOT).
And the winner is……….TONY!!!!!! with his smashing blue ????? I don’t know what.
