Livingstone to Lusaka

Today is the start of a couple of long days of driving.  Our next major destination point is Lake Malawi in Malawi.

We left the Waterfront campsite in Livingstone at 7:30 a.m. and stopped in town to pick up some ice and other supplies before hitting the road for Lusaka.  We were on our way by 8:00 a.m
.
We travelled through fairly dry areas, but things seemed to be getting a little greener as we headed toward Lusaka.  Several areas appeared to have been scorched by fire, but  it soon became obvious that the underbrush was being burned to make way for new growth and seeding with the coming wet season which will occur in November/December.  As we drew nearer Lusaka, it was clear that there was increased agricultural activity with large plowed fields and in one small town we passed through, there were actually grain terminal buildings.

Today’s drive was a little more comfortable temperature-wise, with the temperature running in the low 30s rather then the 38-40 degrees we have been experiencing over much of the trip.

We arrived in the modern city of Lusaka in the late afternoon.  Lusaka is the capital of Zambia and has a population of around 2.5 million.  We stopped in town to pick up additional supplies before heading to our campsite/game farm just outside the city limits.  The campsite is located on a game farm adjacent to the city so we were able to spot several wild animals, zebra and various species of antelope, grazing in the bush and trees as we neared the campsite.

We set up camp, had supper and then bedded down for the night in preparation for the long drive tomorrow.
