A Day in Windhoek

Easy day today.  We left the Waterberg Plateau at 7:00 a.m. sharp and drove straight through to Windhoek (capital city of Namibia), arriving in Windhoek at around 10:00 a.m..  We have been checked into the Safari Hotel.  A great hotel with all the amenities.  I would say it is probably a 3-4 star hotel.  After checking in, some of us headed downtown.  The hotel runs a free shuttle service to a mall and downtown.  The shuttle makes a trip every hour, so it is like a hop on/hop off service.

Wow, Africa is not what I expected.  Windhoek is a beautiful city with malls and shops offering everything you would ever want.  It's hard to describe, but it is like any city in Canada with a population of around 250,000.

You will remember from an earlier blog where I talked about coming across the Himba tribe and the women are nearly nude.  Well, they are also here in Windhoek.  They have a stall set up in the downtown core where they sell their crafts.  You see them walking around in the malls and on the streets buying stuff just like everybody else.  It is really strange to see them walking around nude.  I have to laugh a little for in Canada they would probably be arrested.

There is not much to report tonight.  Some members of our Cape Town group ended their tour here and others have joined us for the Windhoek to Livingstone leg.  I am tired tonight so will end the blog here along with some pictures I took around Windhoek.
